Commercial Printing Air Quality Solutions
The CAP™ Clean Air Plant was tested on destruction of printers blanket wash, a solvent used to clean rollers on small printing presses between runs. The blanket wash, a clear liquid with a strong petroleum odor, is considered an OSHA Class 1B flammable liquid. Overexposure to the vapors will irritate the nose, throat, and lungs, and can cause central nervous system depression with symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, and unconsciousness. Solvents are a source of concern in printing shops for health, as well as, fire hazards. Blanket wash is the most common solvent used by the printing industry, since cleaning rollers typically has to take place between each job. It contains petroleum naphtha and dipropylene glycolmethyl ether. The CAPs destruction efficiency calculated to be 98.7 percent for two CAP cartridges. The CAPs essentially destroyed the entire 210,000 ppmv of blanket wash injected, neverallowing the contaminant level to rise above one-half of 1 percent of the injected amount. The results of the demonstration are shown in the figure below. The CAP immediately reduced the exposure levels of the blanket wash to below the standard OSHA workplace limitations. Based on this demonstration, we conclude that the CAP successfully destroys the target compounds. We rrecommend this technology for the reliable destruction of blanket- wash solvents and chemical fumes. As depicted in the figure below, the CAP can bring pollution concentrations of VOCs to non-harmful and non-flammable levels. The CAP is a major advancement for the treatment of indoor air pollution. Traditional solutions to indoor air quality problems, like air exchange and source control are not always sufficient to eliminate indoor air pollution. CAPs eliminate contaminants at the point where they are generated, reducing the need for venting and eliminating odors at their source. ↓ See Chart below

Copier Toner and Laser Printers
Photocopiers and laser printers use toner comprised of tiny particles of a black amorphous carbon pigment which is transferred by electrical charge and fixed in place on the paper by heating. Excess toner and any paper particulate caused by the motion of the paper through the machine are trapped by the brushes and filters within the machine. They are then pumped out with the cooliing fans.
The nature of the electrostatic charge used in the transfer of the image can result in the production of ozone which is a naturally occuring substance at high altitude in the atmosphere where it forms a protective shield against dangerous components of sunlight. High concentrations of ozone can cause irritation to the eyes and mucous membranes but it can be recognised by its pungent odour so it would be noticeable. The main symptoms of these sort of emissions will be irritation of the eyes, nose or throat, perhaps coughing and dry facial skin.
CAP will neutralize these particles and destroy them. Additionally these units will capture and destoyed airbourne paper dust. Contact us for more information.
